This painting was obviously inspired by pulp novel covers. After re-reading War of the Worlds and pouring over countless interpretations, this is the tripod design that I feel not only fits Wells' description, but also meets our subconscious expectations. Unlike the updated George Pal and Spielberg designs, these feel almost like something out of a childhood dream... somewhat caricatured, but all the more frightening because of it... like a killer clown.
I don't recall Billy Dee Williams ever running away from the spotlight - he deserves whatever he gets.
ReplyDeleteAll joking aside, it's fun! I like the "toy robot" simplicity a of saucer shape with Doc-Oc arms. That priest in the foreground must have just seen something completely horrible happen right in front of him.
